Pilot AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) based H2 Generation Plant

Pilot AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) based H2 Generation Plant

Pilot AEM plant at NTPC Dadri has been commissioned on 7.11.23. Further, various Research and Development works have been planned in the pilot plant.

Rationale

Pilot scale implementation of different hydrogen generation technologies may be required to gain adequate capabilities, technical expertise for selecting the most efficient and economical option for large scale hydrogen production. Further, it shall ensure timely readiness to meet the National Green Hydrogen Mission targets. NTPC already has experience of alkaline electrolyzers (hydrogen generation in existing coal power plants for generator cooling) and pilots for PEM and solid oxide electrolyzer technologies for hydrogen generation are already implemented/under implementation by NTPC.

For gaining experience in all four verticals of electrolysers and having the readiness for selecting the most suitable techno-economic solution for large scale hydrogen projects, NTPC has installed a Pilot for AEM electrolyser based H2 generation plant at Dadri.

Brief About the Technology/Works being carried out

Pilot AEM plant at NTPC Dadri has been commissioned on 7.11.23. Further, various R&D works such as study of impact of water quality on electrolyser  operating parameters, design life etc.; study of ramp-up/down times, sea water electrolysis etc. have been planned in the pilot plant.

Benefits of the Technology

The technology has the following advantages:

  • Uses no costly & rare earth metals,
  • Comparatively less power consumption
  • Less stringent water quality requirements (thereby less raw water requirement)
  • Future cost reduction and indigenization prospects as technology uses no costly rare earth metals.
