India's Commitment at COP26

As per commitment in COP 26, India would become carbon neutral and achieve net zero emissions by the year 2070. NTPC being the largest power generating company and responsible corporate citizen of India, is taking various steps to make its energy portfolio greener by adding significant capacities of non-fossil energy sources. With focus on energy security, make in India, and providing low-carbon energy solutions, NTPC is committed and leading the charge towards a sustainable future.

NTPC's Strategic Move into Nuclear Sector

In alignment with our commitment, NTPC is poised to enter the nuclear sector. NTPC has established a Nuclear Engineering Cell based in Mumbai, showcasing our commitment to diversifying our energy portfolio.

NTPC has already taken significant stride in the nuclear domain in 2011 by forming a JVC named Anusakthi Vidyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI) with Nuclear Power Corporation Of India Limited (NPCIL). Government of India (GoI) amended the Atomic Energy Act in 2015, paving the way for Joint Venture of Public Sector Units (PSUs) to build, own & operate Nuclear Power Plants in India. The JV company ASHVINI is in different stages of development, and discussions are underway with Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) & NPCIL to identify projects for execution. Please click on the link to visit ASHVINI website.
SMRs are compact nuclear reactors that differ in size from conventional counterparts. Engineered with a modular design, they aim to shorten construction times and offer scalability for diverse applications, including power generation. In collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), NTPC is actively engaged in discussions for the development of SMR. This forward-looking initiative aims to revolutionize the energy landscape, offering the potential to decarbonize the energy sector and provide innovative solutions for repurposing of retiring thermal power plants.
Ensuring a stable fuel supply is a paramount concern for every power plant. We are currently in the process of finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UCIL, with a primary focus on securing uranium assets internationally. This strategic initiative aims to guarantee a dependable and sustainable source of fuel.
The process of identifying suitable locations for the establishment of nuclear power plants is a challenging and pivotal aspect of expanding the nuclear power program. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) to collaboratively identify both brownfield and greenfield sites suitable for installing both conventional large-scale and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Aligned with the core goals of the Government of India's Mission Green Hydrogen, NTPC is proactively investigating diverse technologies associated with Hydrogen Generation. To deepen our knowledge and promote collaboration in this vital field, NTPC is engaging in discussions with Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) & Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) regarding hydrogen production derived from nuclear power.

Our Valued Partnerships

NTPC is proud to collaborate with esteemed organizations such as DAE (Department of Atomic Energy), NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) & National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) reinforcing our commitment towards carbon neutral through nuclear energy sector.

Towards Affordable & Decarbonized Energy

Atomic energy is a highly knowledgeable driven sector, which requires specialised workforce. For accelerated expansion of the nuclear power many experts’ experience in the field will be required. Development of expertise in the area takes longer time as compared to other fields and hence there is limited expertise available worldwide in this area. One way is to harness the services of the experts who has completed their service life and superannuating from the field but carrying a lot of wisdom with them. For possible utilization of their expertise, a database is being created. All such experts are requested to register using the link provided below.
