Dulanga Coal Mining

NTPC is India’s largest Power conglomerate with roots planted way back in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. Since then, it has established its presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business.

To strengthen its core business and a step towards fuel security, NTPC has forayed into coal mining as a part of its backward integration strategy. NTPC group has a total of 9 coal blocks with a combined peak production capacity of 91.6 Million Tonnes per annum. The first coal mines, Pakri Barwadih in the state of Jharkhand was opened in FY 2017-18 and since then, the group company has been able to successfully operationalise 6 coal blocks.

Recognizing the potential of mining business, NTPC has incorporated a wholly owned subsidiary, “NTPC Mining Limited (NML)”, on 29th August, 2019 to bring in a focussed approach for development in this business vertical. This subsidiary has secured the first commercial coal mine of NTPC’s portfolio by emerging as the “Successful Bidder” for North Dhadu (Eastern Part) coal block. Six coal blocks from NTPC Limited are under transfer to this new subsidiary company.

MTPA-Million Tonnes Per Annum

The six operational mines of NTPC had collectively clocked 45 Million Tonnes of coal production in FY 2024-25 alongside registering a strong YoY growth of 20%.

Despite challenges such as land acquisition issues, rehabilitation and resettlement requirements, the COVID‑19 pandemic, and local disruptions affecting production continuity, NTPC’s mines have continued to grow steadily. This progress has been driven by resolute leadership, a resilient workforce, and timely support from district and state administrations. This consistent upward trajectory reflects NTPC’s commitment to enhancing captive coal production and strengthening fuel security for its power stations. (Source: IAR FY24)
