Proof of Concept for DG Replacement with BESS

Proof of Concept for DG Replacement with BESS

DG replacment

Rationale

As part of NTPC’s ongoing efforts to explore cleaner and more sustainable alternative power backup, the potential use of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in place of DG sets in thermal power plants is being studied.

Brief About the Technology/Works being carried out

This initiative is being implemented in a phased manner.

  • In Phase I, the focus is on assessing the technical feasibility of using BESS to meet emergency load requirements of the thermal power plant in the event of a grid supply interruptions.
  • In Phase-II, multiple application use cases such as time-shifted energy usage, ramp-up/down support, etc., along with emergency power back-up shall be explored to assess the commercial viability of BESS as potential alternative to DG sets.

Potential Benefits of the Pilot/Technology

The pilot is expected to offer the following indicative benefits, subject to evaluation during implementation:

  • Emergency Backup capability: Assessment of BESS capability to support critical emergency loads of a thermal power plant during grid outages.
  • Operational Learning: Collection of site-specific data and operational experience to understand the integration of BESS within the existing thermal plant framework.
  • Environmental Advantages: BESS, as a zero emission technology, may help reduce pollution compared to diesel generators.
  • Multiple Application use case exploration: The pilot provides an opportunity to explore the possibility of using BESS for multiple application use cases.
  • Reduced Noise and Maintenance: The pilot will help evaluate if BESS can offer quieter and reduced maintenance operation compared to conventional DG sets.
